* Fred GRAY is again holding the position of tonsorial artist at the hotel.
* Miss Maggie LEONARD returned to her home in Tonawanda, last Monday.
* Mr. GARRETT, of Harrison Valley, Penn., spent Sunday as a guest of Miss Susie HOWELL.
* O.W. PEARSON, returned this (Wednesday) noon from a three week's visit in Maine.
* Dan and Clair BRASTED of Howard, were visiting old school friends the first of the week.

*Miss Corabella CRANDALL is visiting at Tonawanda, and while there she is to take part in a concert.
* Miss Allie PIERCE has returned from Coryville, Penn, where she has been teaching the past summer.
* Fred C. HARTSHORN, who suicided at Hornellsville last week, was a nephew of the late Dr. HARTSHORN of this village.
*Lt. CHARLES of the firm of Charles and Tuttle, publishers of the "Steuben Signal", died of typhoid fever in Hornellsville last week.
* Rev. L.E. LIVERMORE has improved the looks of his barn and wood shed by clapboarding them.
* Since starting a milk delivery, F.D. HESELTINE has had to procure a new pump. This looks suspicious Fred.
* J.M. STILLMAN has returned to Milton, Wis, to resume his duties as director of musical department of Milton          College.
* Rev. L.A. PLATTS and son Willie, attended the union picnic of the Sabbath schools of Hornellsville, which was held at Portage last Thursday.
* The Alfred Centre Bakery is again operation. Mr. R.W. LOWELL of Olean, an experienced baker is in command. For the present the salesroom will be in the variety store.
* Thos. B. TITSWORTH has his residence on Terrace Avenue very tastily painted.
*Miss Mary KING has returned from her summer's teaching in Oneida county.
*E.S. BLISS was elected one of the delegates to attend the Prohibition State convention.
*Parties from out of town wishing to make entries for our fair can do so by addressing T.M. DAVIS, Sec. Alfred Centre, N.Y.
*Rev. A. COIT of Wellsville, will occupy the desk of W.C. TITSWORTH next Sabbath, he being in attendance at the annual meeting of the church at Hebron, Penn.
*Last Sabbath it was voted to call A.G. CROFOOT to ordination to the gospel ministry and arrangements have been made for the services to occur on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
* The SHAW family reunion and picnic was held Sept. 3d. About 75 relatives were present and enough neighbors and friends to increase the number to 130. The day passed pleasantly. Adjourned to meet at the same place on first Thursday in September 1886. [Transcriber note: Another "tidbit" about this picnic appeared in another section of this newspaper. It said: "The annual picnic of the SHAW family and relatives was held last Thursday in a grove near the residence of Ed SHAW, and was well attended by those claiming kinship."]
* Byron L. GREEN, with his little daughter, returned Friday from Battle Creek, Mich. He is very much improved in health, and his many friends hope that it may prove permanent. Mrs. GREEN, with her sister, Miss Louise ELLIS, are to remain a few weeks longer.
* Rev. C.A. BURDICK of Nile, was in town last week.
* Frank SISSON is improving the appearance of the front part of his mother's house, by filling in with sand, and in building stairs leading down to the house.
* Will SCOTT has the cellar wall for his house nearly completed.
* C.M. VINCENT of Friendship, was in town a few days ago and purchased of J.K. READING the house that Will SCOTT now occupies, with intention of moving it on his lot at some future time.
* I.M. LEWIS killed a small water fowl, or bird with a stone on ROBY's pond last Saturday. It was sent up to F.S. PLACE for a name.
* Al BURDICK, with his new stem thresher, was at MCHENRY's and HAMILTON's today, and an old thresher said it was neastest running machine he ever saw.
* Mrs. Harriet SNYDER and daughter have gone to Portage to visit her brother who resides at that place.
* J.C. BURDICK has a new harness which made to order by GONTER, at Andover. It is extra made, and finished in fine stitching, with gilt trimming, and is a very stylish harness.
* Mrs. H.M. BURDICK has been quite sick again, confined to her bed but is reported better at present.
* Max CRANDALL claims that with a Royce Reaper, he cut 13 acres of oats in 8 hours.
*Mrs. John A. WOODCOCK of Whitesville, mother of the late proprietors of the hotel of that name, and who had been in feeble health for a long time, died Thursday morning, August 27, aged 59 years. She was a quiet, kindly disposed woman and will be greatly missed by a large circle of relatives and friends.

* Lysander STONE, of Lysander, Onondaga Co., was visiting relatives in town last week.
* Josiah TRASK had a barn raising last Thursday. Ransom FISH architect.
*The Universalists of Whitesville have re-engaged Rev. W.H. MCCLANFLIN for another year.
