- Bert BOYCE of Wellsville, was at his
father's in this village over Sunday.
- C.C. CHIPMAN and Job BRIGGS have
returned from their trip to Rhode Island.
- Dorr COBB and Milton POTTER of
Ulysses, Pa., were in town the first of the week.
- Found in this village a silver watch. The
owner will call at A.A. SHAW for the same.
- Miss HAKES, of Wellsville spent a few
days with friends in this village last week.
- The second annual re-union and picnic of the SHAW
family will be held in the grove near Ed SHAW's on Thursday, Sept.
3d.
- Mrs. Wells DAVIS and daughter, Fannie,
of Shiloh, N.J. spent a few days with friends in this village last week.
They left for Canisteo Sunday afternoon.
- L.S. HOWARD of the Collins Factory will
please accept our thanks for a small quantity of cheese curd
"borrowed" from his factory last Sabbath afternoon.
- Special attractions will be offered this year
by the Agricultural Society. Those not having premium lists can obtain them
by calling on or addressing T.M. DAVIS, Alfred Centre, N.Y.
- Will SAUNDERS is expected home this
week from his trip to New Jersey.
- Sam H. COON, of the Salamanca
"Republican" was in town Saturday and Sunday.
- E.S. BLISS is having a veranda built
around the entire front of his residence, which will add much to its
appearance.
- Train 8, Sunday had an extra that was quite a
train. It was composed of twelve cars, and each car contained fourteen tons
of gold and silver bullion on its way from San Francisco to New York.
- The Leonardsville, N.Y. correspondent to the
"Brookfield Courier" says: "Mrs. Elizabeth BROWN is
shipping her household goods to Alfred Centre, in readiness for the opening
of school, at which her granddaughter, Agnes will be in attendance.
- Robert GORTON and wife have been
visiting their parents and friends at Alfred and Belmont for a vacation. He
is still in business in New York and it will be no discredit to our village
to send out more young men of the same stripe as its representatives.
- A plank sidewalk is being laid from L.E. LIVERMORE's
to the bridge.
- Ira B. CRANDALL and wife of Westerly, R.I.
arrived in town Tuesday night.
- SAUNDERS expects to be at his
Friendship studio from August 27th to September 2d inclusive.
- The fresh air children left for their homes in
New York last Tuesday evening on train 32.
- The band is holding nightly rehearsals,
preparatory to their Friendship trip.
- Charlie GRADINER of Nile has engagged
for a clership in the store of A.E. & W.H. CRANDALL.
- Prof. BLAKESLEE and family, Mrs. ROBINSON
and daughter, Sara, arrived in town this (Wednesday) noon.
- Work on the cottage of O.S. POTTER is
progressing and it its exterior is now being treated to a coat of paint.
- The new road, running from the Brick across
Terrace Avenue was opened and partially worked last Sunday.
- The annual school meeting will be held at the
Graded School building on Tuesday evening, Aug 25th at 7:30 o'clock.
- Rev. E.W. WITTER and family have moved
to Dodge's Creek, which is to be the scene of the Elder's labors for a time.
- Mrs. E.G. CHAMPLIN who has been
spending the summer with her son George, and other friends in town, returned
to her home in Mystic Bridge, Conn., today.
- Phineas STILLMAN is quite sick with
heart difficulty, and it was thought Monday that he would not survive, but
later developments show him to be slightly improving.
- James T. BURDICK of Friendship, has
been in town this week. He reports Friendship as making preparations for a
grand time at the unveiling of their soldiers monument. He has been
appointed one of the marshals of the day.
- During the severe thunderstorm of Tuesday
afternoon and evening, the house of Miss Hannah SAUNDERS was struck
by lighting. No damage was done save the tearing off a few clapboards.
