- The people of our quiet little town were startled yesterday afternoon by
the cry of fire! fire! and several were called in putting out a fire in the
roof of the back part of O.E.VAR's house. Although the roof was
burned quite badly about the chimney, by the timely aid of friends, the
house was saved. Had the fire got a little more start, the probability is
that much damage would have been done besides burning the one house, for the
wind was right to have swept the whole south side of Greenwood Street. Is
not this a warning to our townspeople to prepare themselves with the
necessary apparatus for protection against the fire-fiend? Has there not
been enough lost within a recent time to pay for all the needed apparatus?
We join our neighbors of Alfred in raising a word of warning, and urge our
citizens to think soberly upon this matter.

CHINA WEDDING:
Last Wednesday evening, the 26th inst. about twenty
of the relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. R.S. JACOBS met at their
little "home on the hillside," to celebrate in a quiet way the twentieth
anniversary of their marriage. The host and hostess, with their two daughters
and little grandson, welcomed them right royally, and furnished a good
substantial feast, that appeared to be appreciated to the full by all present.
The evening passed pleasantly enlivened by music, singing, and visiting with old
friends. About forty invited guests failed to put in an appearance owing to the
execrable condition of the roads; but some of the Alfred Centre friends sent
gifts and regrets at not being able to attend. Following is a list of the gifts
and names of the donors: Majolica water pitcher, Rev. L.E. LIVERMORE and
wife, Alfred Centre; white china fruit dish, china moustache cup and saucer,
china cup and saucer, Mr. and Mrs. E.D. POTTER, J.P. LIVERMORE,
Mrs. Frances CRANDALL [rest of article was unreadable on my copy]
